| 1. At our place ... we live with my father. Now we live together with my father, my older sister and my brother-in-law. Besides, my brothers live with us too. I have five younger brothers as well [besides me].
My brothers have all given up studying. Now... sometimes last year... my smallest brother left school as well. No... they went to the forest perhaps because they wanted to live at home, hunting and fishing. Besides, they longed to live at the land where they had always lived. They did not want to become Russian. So they went home. They left school.
Me, now... to me... I’ve got an elder brother. And then me. I am 24 years old now. I study in Leningrad [lit. Lenin-fellow’s-city]. Earlier it was called that, now... well... Saint Petersburg, I study there. I study to be a teacher. I have been studying for three years, there are still two years left.
2. Now my brothers live by fishing and hunting in the forest. They help our father. Our father, as it is said in Russian, is an invalid of the second class. His eyesight is poor. He lives by fishing. He catches fish, sells them, makes a little money by selling the fish. He lives on this.
My brothers also fish and hunt there. During winter they shoot squirrels, like the majority of the Khanty people. Even the little kids shoot squirrels. During winter... autumn and spring they hunt beavers. Some kind... At other times they go out hunting otters. Sometimes in winter they also go fox-hunting. And they help their father in fishing. In summer they make fish-baskets.
During the previous years, when living in the forest, when coming to the forest I always made fish-baskets. It was said that I was a master of wood. Gradually I have abandoned this thing. My hands somehow – as it is said – handles knife well. I am good at doing woodwork. Had I not abandoned this thing, I would have made really good sleighs and boats. This work has been given up [by me] – well I don’t know – in order to study; it was given up by me.
Formerly I was also about to quit school. My father scolded me heavily, and then I went to study. I thought that besides me at home, all my brothers live at home. I did not want to turn into a Russian either. It was an accident that I went there to study. I think that I would start working in a school first after finishing school, and then perhaps I’ll get to some other workplace. Anyhow, I’ll work somewhere for sure.
3. When living at home, we live like the majority of the Khanty people. In winter and summer alike we live in a tent. Earlier [in the previous years] whenever I went home, we always lived (live) in a tent. No matter how cold it is in winter, we always live in a tent. We used to have a wooden house as well, a tumble-down house. This wooden house has become very old by now. These days people don’t build wooden houses anymore.
Earlier... in the previous years when we had a lot of reindeer, we always lived at the same place because of the deer. By now the number of the reindeer has decreased [lit.: the reindeer have become few] about... to about a hundred. Having this tiny herd, wandering after them we go round [pass.], we always live [pass] in a tent. This is because... this is because we follow[pass] the reindeer in summer too. We always live in a tent [pass, lit.: always tent.in live.pass.prs.Sg3]. Now that my father cannot see well [my father’s eyes cannot see well], he always stays at one place. He catches fish, he has fish-baskets, two... he has two of three cross-dykes. So he catches fish with his fish-baskets, with his cross-dykes.
Now the reindeer are kept by my younger brothers. Things living with my elder sister, there the reindeer are kept (=the reindeer are kept at my elder sister). Keeping reindeer is hard work in summer. Earlier, when we used to have more than 300 reindeer, this was a hard work. A lot of strength is needed for the work. A lot of raw wood is cut, many kinds of wood are cut, and this damp soil called ’bog-moss’ is cut. Fire with smoke is made, fire with smoke appears. A lot of strength is needed to do that job. Sometimes it is done day and night.
In summer the reindeer live with us. In autumn they disperse. In autumn they disperse, and they live among themselves until the fall of the first snow, they turn into wild reindeer.
After the snow has fallen, after it has become a bit thicker, the reindeer are searched for thoroughly, they are gathered in a herd. From then on, the reindeer can be kept in a herd during winter. And again we go round wandering here and there.
4. Our land is not very big. I really say this... It cannot be called a big land. It is really not a big land. It is suitable for keeping reindeer. During the last few years it has become more difficult with reindeer moss. Derricks have been set up all over the place. Reindeer moss has diminished. If we go on like this [lit. living further like this], once we will be left completely without reindeer. During the last two years the majority of our reindeer got lost. Some of them were devoured by bears, some of them were shot by poaching Russians, some of them simply died.
It’s getting more difficult with food as well. We get food for ourselves. The Russians don’t help us anymore, we look for food for ourselves. When, having a little money, we go to the shop, we buy food. Earlier when we travelled by helicopter, this was done quickly. Nowdays helicopters don’t go anymore, and this has become more difficult. Getting food has become more troublesome. Still, we continue to scrape a living somehow. |

| 1. A mi lakóhelyünkön ... apámmal élünk. Apámnál és most nénémnél lakunk, a sógorommal. Ezen fölül az öcséim is nálunk élnek. Rajtam kívül még öt öcsém van.
Az öcséim teljesen abbahagyták a tanulást. Most ... a múlt évben még ... teljesen a legkisebb öcsém is ott hagyta az iskolát. Hogy ... az erdőbe mentek, azért mert talán otthon akartak élni, vadászni, halászni. Azon a földön akartak élni, ahol mindig is laktak. Nem akartak orosz módon élni. Ezért hazamentek. A tanulást abbahagyták.
Én most ... rajtam kívül ... fölöttem a bátyám. Aztán én. Most lettem huszonnégy éves. Én most tanulok hanti nyelven [tkp. hantiul a város neve] Lenin apó városában. Korábban így hívták, most ... izé ... Szentpétervár, ott tanulok. Tanárnak tanulok. Így tanulván már három éve tanulok, még két év maradt.
2. Az öcséim most halászva-vadászba élnek, az erdőben. Apámnak segítenek. Apám oroszul második csoportba tartozó rokkant. A szeme rosszul lát. Halászatból él. Halat fog, a halait eladja, a halat eladva valami pénzecskét szerez. Ebből él.
Ezen kívül az öcséim is halásznak-vadásznak. Télen mókusra vadásznak, mint általában a hanti nép nagy része. Mint a kis gyermekek, mókusra vadásznak. Télen ... Ősszel és tavasszal pézsmapocokra vadásznak. Valamiféle... máskor vidrára vadászni járnak. Télen rókára is vadásznak időnként. És apjuknak segítenek halászni. Nyáron varsát csinálnak.
Az előző években, amikor otthon voltam, ha hazamentem, én mindig varsát készítettem. Az emberek azt mondták, a fa mestere vagyok. Ezt a dolgot lassacskán elhagytam. A kezem valahogyan – az emberek mondják – jól fogja a kést. Jó fúró-faragó ember vagyok. Ha én ezt a dolgot el nem hagytam volna, nagyon jó szánokat, csónakokat faragtam volna. Ezt a dolgot elhagytam, én – nem is tudom – a tanulásért, én elhagytam.
Korábban én is arra készültem, hogy otthagyom az iskolát. Apám alaposan megszidott, azután tanulni mentem. Azt gondoltam, hogy hiszen rajtam kívül otthon, az öcséim is otthon élnek. Orosszá válni nekem sem volt szándékom. Így szóval véletlen mentem oda tanulni. Arra a földre véletlen mentem. A tanulás befejezése után azt gondolom, hogy először egy iskolában fogok dolgozni. Azután talán valami más helyre kerülök. Majd csak dolgozom valahol.
3. Otthon éltünkben úgy élünk, mint a hanti nép többsége. Télen-nyáron mindig sátorban lakunk. A korábbi években, amikor hazajártam, mindig sátorban laktunk. Télen bármilyen hideg van, mindig sátorban lakunk. Volt faházunk is, egy ócska faház. Ez a faházunk nagyon régi lett. Ma már az emberek nem építenek faházat.
Korábban... a korábbi években amikor sok rénszarvasunk volt, a rének miatt egy helyen éltünk. Most megfogyatkoztak a rének. Kb. száz rénünk van. Ezt a morzsányi nyájat tartva, a rének után vándorolva az emberek mindig sátorban laknak. És ezért ... mert nyáron is a rének után kell vándorolni. Mindig sátorban laknak.
Most, hogy apám rosszul lát, egy helyen él, egy helyben marad. Halrekesztéke van, két... kettő-három halrekesztéke. A halrekesztékeivel, a varsáival halat fog.
A réneket most az öcséim tartják. Akik a nénémnél laknak, ott tartják a réneket. Nyáron a réntartás nagy munka. Korábban, amikor több mint háromszáz rénünk volt, sokat bajlódtunk. Nyáron nagyon sok erőre van szükség a munkához. Élő fát kell vágni, sok más fát kell vágni. És ilyen nedves földet, tőzegmoha nevű földet kell vágni. Tüzet, füstöt rakni, tüzet, füstöt gerjeszteni. Ehhez a munkához sok erőre van szükség. Néha éjjel-nappal dolgoznak.
Nyáron a rének velünk vannak. Ősszel szétszélednek. Ősszel szétszélednek, és az első hó megjelenéséig egymás között élnek, vadrénekké válnak. És az első hó megjelenése után, a valamennyire megvastagodása után a réneket szépen megkeresik, egy csomóba gyűjtik. Attól fogva a réneket a tél idején mindig együtt lehet tartani. És ismét vándorolva járunk velük, hol erre, hol arra.
4. A mi földünk nem nagyon nagy. Én azt mondom... nem lehet valami nagy földnek nevezni. Nem nagyon nagy föld. Réntartásra alkalmas. Az elmúlt években a rénzuzmóval egyre nehezebb. Mindenféle izé... fúrótornyokat miket oda állítanak. A zuzmó egyre kevesebb. Tovább élve egyszer teljesen rének nélkül maradunk. Az elmúlt két évben a rénjeink nagy része elveszett. Néhányat a medve tépett szét, másokat az orvvadász oroszok lőttek le. Egy részük magától elpusztult.
Az élelemmel is egyre nehezebb a dolgunk. Az élelmet magunk szerezzük be. Az oroszok már nem segítenek, mi magunk keressük az élelmet. Amikor a boltba megyünk, kevés pénzt szerzünk, élelmet veszünk. Korábban, amikor helikopterrel jártunk, azzal gyorsan végeztünk. Most már nem jár helikopter, és így most ez is nehezebb lett. Az élelem beszerzése nagyon bajos lett. Mégis valahogyan tovább élünk. |
